"You must put your talents to the test,
Billy," Grandpa use to say.
Billy wasn't educated. To tell the truth, not educated at all. Billy liked
flowers and trees because, he said: "Flowers and trees like people
a lot." Billy planted the ravine under trees and flowers.
Nobody could guess how Billy got it right to marry Sarah. "Dumb Billy
is taking pretty Sarah as his wife!" the town called out in surprise.
There were rumours that Sarah had done it to spite rich uncle David's
son because he took too long to propose. Others said it was because David
junior had tried to take her at the barnhouse without asking. The clever
pretty Sarah only smiled and said that she liked flower more than she
liked money.
Billy and Sarah's sons were fit for the world. Ben became a lawyer, William
a doctor, Chris build hotels and Billy junior took his father's strong
young trees to the surrounding towns. Dumb Billy Flower's small farm became
a paradise of colour, butterflies and gnomes. Sarah baked cake and served
tea while Billy chatted about tree and flower species at the buzzing bar-b-que
tables. At meetings in the towns and in the state halls of governments
Billy's bouquets became witness to great men. Each bouquet was adorned
with a small tag: "Billy Flowers - flowers love people." On
other continents many thought that Billy was an important person.
Chris opened the tenth hotel with the history of the group: "It started
with the seed of a bitterberry bush..." Dumb Billy Flowers walked
among the guests with a bunch of flowers in his rough suntanned hands,
"Just put your talents to the test," is all he mumbled shy on
the many gasps of admiration.
Pretty Sarah smiled. "Flowers are more important than money."
